The language tends toward the ornately flowery, whether this reflects the original Serbian or is due in part to the translation is impossible for me to know.

If you want a sweeping historical novel about ethnic conflict regardless of nation or time period, check out Mario Vargas Llosa's War at the End of the Worldbut if you want a decently-entertaining novel and a look into Serbian culture, this isn't bad. I feel bad that this took me mirus to finish because I quite liked the story, but I kept taking a break and finishing something else instead.

For the advanced student of Serbian I would recommend reading it in Mirus, I think there is an English translation although I don't know if it's in print and cannot speak to the kjic of the translation. The story moves forward in typical family epic fashion providing a colorful and convincing portrait of a to me little known culture.
